Historical and new centre
The spatial guiding principle of the Duna Spirit Project is based on the establishment of an intensive link between the existing Nagytétény historical centre and the new part of the city. The park of the historical centre’s well-known Baroque castle, the Száraz-Rudnyánszky Castle, constitutes the imaginary starting point of the build-up concept. A new part of town is being developed in an extensive, streamlined, dynamic system which will, in cooperation with the old centre, become Nagytétény’s new heart.
As part of the most important communal objectives, the Duna Spirit Project aims to reinforce this structural relationship within the city, to lay the foundations for a physical and spiritual renewal and to supplement the existing institutional network.
Main Square
The main square, as a sequence of spaces with different characteristics, will lead dynamically from the icon-like bridging structure arching over main road No. 6 all the way to the Danube Bank. The spaces of different sizes and characteristics will accommodate everything, from outdoor picnics, through events intended to mobilise large numbers of people, to festive occasions serving to organise this part of the city into a community.
The main square will act as a meeting point for various functions; communal facilities, business premises and residential buildings will make the square a complex unit. The square itself may also be used as a market place, an event space or as a promenade for walking. The main square running directly to the Danube will elevate the river to the status of a major spatial component that may be construed as part of the square.
River Bank
In planning the Duna Spirit Project, particular emphasis was laid on the importance of the river link. The almost 1.5-km-long natural green promenade along the Danube Bank that originates from the main square becomes a part of the city via a natural link as a unique feature in Budapest. The planned landscaping features of the promenade built above the flood protection line divide the entire river bank according to the various functions of this district.
The protected natural flora and birds of the sands along the promenade on the bank of the river will remain intact. In order to enhance the link to and the enjoyment of the sandy bank and to fully honour the integrity of the nature conservation area, a network of wooden planks will be built on top of the sands as a path for walkers. The path will create an alternative link between the various functions on the bank (water sports complex, water taxi rank, yacht port) and will provide direct access to the river bank.
